The story is challenging in its open account of the progression of Thielman's feelings, his failures, his successes, and his reluctance to return to the United States after his encounter with massive poverty and indifference to the desperation of the poor. He struggles to build the Working Children of Cristo Rey Center and discovers that he has become so task-oriented that he incorporates some of the bureaucratic attitudes he abhors.
