Diary of a Yuppie Auchincloss, Louis Good. Hardcover. 1st trade edition hardcover with dustjacket 1986 Houghton Mifflin. Very clean. Light-to-average wear to book and jacket. 215pp. Language: English. A chilling novel of contemporary ambition and greed. From Library Journal: 'You're only wrong if you get caught is the credo of 32-year-old Bob Service, who handles corporate takeover cases for a large New York law firm. 30 years ago, people would have called him a shyster. The finer side of his character (he reads Wordsworth and Walter Pater) is buried behind a warlike exterior, and it works for him. Despite rifts with his wife and his mentor, Service gets everything he wants. This brief contemporary novel explores the ethics of loyalty in business, love, and friendship. Auchincloss, a prolific novelist of manners, is also a Wall Street attorney, and his shallow, ambitious characters ring true. The title is unfortunate, but it may help increase the readership for this subtle, memorable book.'-- Joyce Smothers. Price:

The Man Behind the Book: Literary Profiles Auchincloss, Louis Very Good. Hardcover. 1st edition hardcover with dustjacket Houghton Mifflin 1996. Never read; superclean; no marks; pages bright; binding tight. Light shelfwear to jacket. 208pp. Language: English. '[A] highly personal collection of critical and biographical sketches of 23 writers who have, [the author] says, at one point or another of my life... meant a great deal to me as a reader and writer. In spite of the title, 6 of the writers are women. As Auchincloss points out, the men behind the book have little in common, and not all can be regarded as major literary figures. They range from Cyril Tournier, an almost unknown contemporary of Shakespeare, through Anne Bronte, Alexandre Dumas, Sarah Orne Jewett and Harold Frederic to Amy Lowell, Harold Nicholson and Robert E. Sherwood. Some of them he knew personally, but his most common approach is to quote liberally to show how the writers reveal something of themselves in their work. The tone throughout is graceful, appreciative and a bit avuncular. The observations can be pointed. He describes Maxwell Anderson, for example, as a deft craftsman who couldn't write a bad scene or a great play. Walter Pater is praised for being a great stylist who wasn't afraid to sound corny. 4 of the profiles have been published previously.'--Publishers Weekly, 1996. Price:
