Fair condition: hinges broken so covers are loose (now partially reinforced with archival paper tape); first front endpaper missing; foxing and light dampstains to many pages; age-tanning to pages; cover corners and edges worn and frayed. NO DUSTJACKET. Text clean and unmarked. Good for reading / research only. Small antique label inside front cover for Frank L. Norton, Pharmacist and Bookseller, Delhi, NY. Decorative boards still very attractive: black floral designs on gray/brown cloth; dulled gilt titles on front and spine. 658 pages. Language: English. Novel about an artist, Harold Van Berg, and how he is struck by the disparity between the beauty of young Ida Mayhew and the ugliness of her character. Roe was a Presbyterian minister and popular American novelist whose writings are noted for their moralistic tone and Christian themes.
