Very Good.
Hardcover. Oversize hardcover presumed 1st edition 1993 Yellow Brick Road Press U.K. Glossy picture cover--no dustjacket. Superclean; no marks; only a hint of wear. 'In this Creation fable, God makes all dinosaurs happy herbivores. After 150 million years, however, a sudden outbreak of possessiveness leads to rampant greed and selfishness. Dinosaurs stop sharing, and some become carnivores. God decides to end their reign (via earthquakes and volcanoes) and try again-with a smarter creature able to reflect on problems instead of reacting violently. The message is clear-and so is the image of God as a punitive Enforcer. The illustrations feature colored clay figures posed against painted backdrops or in clay landscapes.'--Patricia Dooley, School Library Journal.

I Lost My Arrow in a Kankan Tree, Lichtveld, Noni
6 I Lost My Arrow in a Kankan Tree Lichtveld, Noni
Very Good.
Hardcover. 1st U.S. edition 1994 Lothrop Lee and Shepard. Superclean; no marks; pages bright; binding tight; never read. Store shelfwear to jacket. Ca. 30pp, color artwork. Language: English. 'In this bouncy Surinamese cumulative tale, Jakono leaves his parents and his 10 little brothers and sisters to find work. When he shoots down a pigeon, his arrow catches in the tree. From then on, his journey is propelled by a series of trades: Granmisi, an old woman, gladly takes the pigeon and offers Jakono a pumpkin. A carpenter swaps a walking stick for the pumpkin, and so forth. Each exchange helps others, not Jakono. In the end, he receives more than a job, but the final barter does as much good for the entire kingdom as it does for Jakono's family. Lichtveld's colorful, full-bleed illustrations fancifully depict the cultures and peoples of Suriname, particularly the Indonesian and Muslim populations. A note on the jacket informs the reader that Surinamese families, including the author's, would hold contests to see who could recite Jakono's tale fastest. Ages 4-up.'--Publishers Weekly, 1994. Keywords: juvenile, South America, South American, folk, folktale, Surinam, Indian, former, Dutch, colony, folklore, ethnic, story, picture book.

16 The Race of the Golden Apples Martin, Claire; Dillon, Leo (illustrator); Dillon, Diane (illustrator)
0803702485 / 9780803702486 Very Good.
Hardcover. Stated 1st edition hardcover with dustjacket 1991 Dial Books. New and unused, with store shelfwear scuffing to jacket. Superclean; no marks; pages bright; binding tight. Ca. 28pp. Language: English. For ages ca. 4-8. 'Imposing paintings by the gifted Dillons, two-time winners of the Caldecott Medal, illustrate Martin's debut book: a stylish, lucid retelling of the myth of Atalanta. Deep in the forest, the goddess Diana raises this Greek princess, who was abandoned at birth by her cruel father. The child, who delighted to swim swift-flowing rivers and ran like the wind, is not pleased when Diana tells her she must return to the kingdom of her aging father, who longs for an heir. But Atalanta goes and reluctantly agrees to marry, on the condition that her intended outrun her in a race--something no one has ever done. Venus comes to the aid of the winning suitor, Hippomenes, who has long been captivated by the princess. Framed by stylized arboreal designs, the Dillons' art is reminiscent of the medieval tapestries that inspired it. Geometric and floral patterns, as well as the fauna and flora of the forest, are rendered in stunning detail, and muted greens and golds contrast strikingly with luminous hues.'--Publishers Weekly, 1991.
