Act of Treason: The Role of J. Edgar Hoover in the Assassination of President Kennedy, North, Mark
3 Act of Treason: The Role of J. Edgar Hoover in the Assassination of President Kennedy North, Mark
Good.
Hardcover. 1st edition hardcover with dustjacket 1991 Carroll and Graf. Very clean; pages bright; binding tight. Edge-crumpling to jacket; small closed rip. 671pp, Index, Notes, Bibliography, B/W photos. Language: English. NOTE: Large format; cannot ship outside U.S. via Flat-Rate envelope. 'North, a Texas lawyer, claims that the President died as the result of a plot masterminded by Louisiana Mafia chieftain Carlos Marcello--and, more importantly, that FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover learned early on about the plan but did nothing to stop it, warning neither the Secret Service nor the Dallas police. His motives, according to North: hatred of Kennedy, fear that the President would get rid of him and a longing for the accession of Lyndon Johnson, whom Hoover had in his pocket because of scandals surrounding the vice-president. North neatly sketches Hoover's bizarre personality, how he ran the FBI and the ways in which the FBI is supposed to cooperate with other agencies.'--Publishers Weekly.

9 Bound to Empire: The United States and the Philippines Brands, H. W.
Very Good.
Hardcover. Hardcover with dustjacket 1992 Oxford. Superclean; no marks; pages bright; binding tight. Light edgewear to jacket; front flap CREASED. 384pp, Index, Notes. Language: English. From Spanish-American War to Corazon Aquino. NOTE: Cannot ship outside U.S. via Global Priority -- Surface or Airmail only. 'From the U.S. annexation of the Philippines in 1899 to independence in 1946, through a century of American domination, the relationship between the two has been a study of power--military, economic, and political. This thoughtful, well-conceived, and superbly written volume is perhaps the best in the string of books on the U.S. role in the Philippines. Clearly it is the most scholarly. The importance of the islands was nowhere more evident than during World War II. The Philippines were also crucial to American anti-Communist strategy from the Cold War to Vietnam. Brands (history, Texas A&M) provides a careful analysis of the people and events that shaped U.S. colonial policy. A well-researched and -documented monograph.... Strongly recommended.'--Boyd Childress, Library Jouirnal, 1992.

Hooray for Peace, Hurrah for War: The United States During World War I (Library of American History), Jantzen, Steven
18 Hooray for Peace, Hurrah for War: The United States During World War I (Library of American History) Jantzen, Steven
Very Good.
Hardcover. 1st edition hardcover with dustjacket 1991 Facts on File (originally published in a different form by Knopf, 1971). Very clean; no marks; pages bright; binding tight. Only very light wear. 181 pages; Index; Bibliography; black-and-white photos. Language: English. 'Jantzen's lively work--adapted from his adult title--has as its underlying theme that the United States doesn't enter into war without first couching its reasons in idealistic, moralistic terms and slogans that inevitably lead to postwar disillusionment and reactionary sentiment. Seemingly, there is an innate American distaste for openly admitting to engaging in traditional power politics and warfare for the sake of furthering our nation's interests. Jantzen devotes relatively little attention to American military exploits, examining instead peripheral matters (race relations, labor problems, socialism, etc.) that illustrate what the public was doing, thinking, and saying before, during, and after Mr. Wilson's War. By making liberal use of appropriate quotations from speeches, newspaper articles, editorials, letters, diaries, poems, etc., he entertains, informs, and enables readers to draw their own conclusions concerning the wisdom of the U. S.'s entry into this war. Such a judgment, according to Jantzen, will make all of us better able to make similar judgments when . . . a threatening situation abroad calls for an American response. --David A. Lindsey, School Library Journal, 1991.
