'In his 3rd book about children and sports, Solomon depicts, mainly through vivid color photographs, young hockey participants. ... [T]he book does not attempt to teach the game but presents hockey action in the photos with a minimal amount of writing. The first part of the book deals with a pick-up game of hockey being organized and played in a rural setting on a frozen pond. Equipment is sparse and rudimentary; players arrive and join in as the game progresses, and no score is kept. The second section, twice as long as the first one, shows multiethnic city boys (no girls are readily evident in either section) playing organized hockey. Here an ice-making machine smooths the ice, coaches conduct various hockey drills, equipment is abundant and refined, the games are timed, and there are winners and losers. The dazzling photos will make this offering popular with children involved in or curious about the fast-paced sport of ice hockey.' --Tom S. Hurlburt, School Library Journal, 1990.
