Signed by author: 'Elizabeth Yates' is penned in faded blue ink on front free endpaper. Noticeable average wear overall; a few pages are creased. Jacket is in Good-minus condition: chunks missing at top and bottom of spine; several small holes. Gold foil Newbery Medal sticker on front is peeled off around the edges. Biography of Fortune (1710-1801), who was born the son of an African king, captured by slave traders, brought to America, and sold at auction. After 45 years of slavery he bought his freedom, and became a tanner and leading citizen of New Hampshire. A Newbery Honor Book. No ISBN.
